Our halls of accommodation at The Maltings are situated in the heart of Birmingham on Granville Street, between Broad Street and Bath Row. The site is located about 15 minutes’ walk from our main campus and only a short distance from a range of shops, bars and restaurants around the city centre, as well as major transport links.
The Maltings houses 827 study bedrooms – 809 en suite, five twins and 18 with shared bathrooms. Most of the flats are mixed sex, typically housing six to nine residents.
The site features landscaped gardens as well as a sports hall and gym to help you keep active during your time with us. You also have access to The Maltings Social Space, a communal area providing the ideal spot for relaxation or study and a wide variety of activities and entertainment.

Your home away from home
In order to help you adjust in your first year, you are guaranteed a place within our halls of accommodation. Unlike most universities, there are no upfront costs – we will not even charge you a deposit when you apply.
By living in our student accommodation, you will have the best of both worlds on your doorstep. You can be part of a friendly environment surrounded by a wealth of student budget restaurants and cafes, banks and supermarkets, as well as access to outstanding transport links.

Living at The Maltings was perfect to walk to university during the week and to all the entertainment venues Birmingham has to offer. It was a short walk to Broad Street, the Bullring and all sorts of bars and restaurants.
Accommodation facilities
All our rooms at The Maltings are fully furnished and include free WiFi, bed, fitted wardrobe, desk, chair, shelves and notice boards as well as complimentary insurance.
Each flat has a fully-fitted kitchen and dining areas including a fridge-freezer, electric cooker, microwave, kettle and iron. En suite rooms have a toilet, shower and hand basin, while a commercial laundry service is also available with washing and drying machines.

Are there any application deadlines?
The application process for academic year 2021/22 opened in April 2021. To guarantee accommodation, your application must be received by:
- UK/EU students – 29 July 2021
- International students – 30 August 2021
- Clearing/insurance – 30 August 2021
What is in the room?
Each room has a bed, mattress, mattress protector, wardrobe, study desk and chair, drawers, curtains and booster heater.
Catering or self-catering?
Our University halls of accommodation are self-catering.
When can I move into the halls of residence?
Unless you are studying on a specialist course during the summer period, your accommodation contract will begin on Saturday 4 September 2021.
Is internet included in the costs?
Yes. All residents at The Maltings have access to free WiFi.
Weekly rent
- The weekly rent for 2023/24 is £125 standard / £148 en suite
- Our annual contract is 42 weeks, from September to June – many universities and private providers only offer 45-51 week contracts. With us, you won’t be charged in the holidays, which is a £2,000 saving.
- Contracts are open to students studying on Erasmus+ courses and Study Abroad courses, along with those on placement.
- All prices include heating, lighting, WiFi and contents insurance.
The Maltings Social Space
Serving as the main communal area at The Maltings, Social Space provides an ideal spot for you to relax, meet friends and enjoy a wide range of events and entertainment.
The space offers a variety of activities, including a Game Zone with arcade machines, 50-inch gaming machines, pool and football tables. There is a lounge area featuring an 86-inch TV with Sky entertainment, sports and movies, plus an activities studio with a large screen TV and surround sound speakers to support a range of keep fit, yoga and other workout sessions.
There is also an IT suite at The Maltings offering PCs and presentation facilities. This suite is available throughout the day with no need to book in advance.

Keep active
If you want to keep fit while staying in our halls of accommodation, The Maltings has a range of facilities to help you stay active.
We have a sports hall which hosts a variety of events throughout the week, from football and hockey to netball and badminton.
There is also a gym available for you to use throughout the day, hosting the latest gym equipment as well as offering workout sessions.

Type of accommodation
As all of our rooms are self-catering, you will need to provide your own cooking utensils and bedding.
Most of the flats are mixed sex, typically housing between six and nine residents. The majority of rooms are en suite, though we also have three flats with shared shower rooms and bathrooms.
All rooms at The Maltings are non-smoking.
Security
Student safety is our number one priority. The Maltings is a secure site with full-time and part-time hall managers supported by night-time security. There is also a comprehensive CCTV system and a fob-operated gate.
Mail is delivered to your post box each day. Parcels, recorded/registered or special delivery items can be collected from the reception office during opening hours.
